Breathing Bathtub – a bath which literally breathes!

Coinciding with the recent prestigious London design fair, 100% Design, Spanish company Roca announced the winning design of its annual Jump the Gap International Design Contest – the Breathing Bathtub, created by young Chinese designer Li Xi.

Breathing Bathtub – otherwise referred to as ‘the bath which breathes’ – is an innovative concept which transforms the bath into a more salubrious experience for the user. It’s also much more environmentally friendly than a conventional bath in terms of the amount of energy it consumes and the water it saves. Thanks to a revolutionary material resembling a sponge which coats the bath, the inside of the bath moulds itself perfectly to the user’s contours, thereby guaranteeing maximum comfort and reducing the amount of water used to less than half that used in a normal bath.

What’s more, in a way that recalls osmosis in plants, this spongy material acts as a filtre: the impurities in the water seep through the coating living the bath and are trapped in its bottom layer. This guarantees that the water is always clean. It also gives an indication of when the water needs to be replaced.

Roca is widely recognised as a paragon of cutting-edge, innovative bathroom design. It has collaborated with ultra-prestigious architects, including Rafael Moneo, David Chipperfield and Herzog & De Meuron as well as with such interior designers and studios as Benedito Design, Giugiaro Design and Schmidt & Lackner - proof of the company’s commitment to making design central to its business philosophy. Indeed its forward-thinking products set trends and meet the needs of consumers in the future and not just in the present.
