Maya lamp created by Mermelada Estudio for Almerich
While checking out the new designs unveiled at the latest Feria Hábitat Valencia trade fair, our eyes were drawn to various seductive-looking products by Almerich, including its modular light, Maya.
Designed by Mermelada Estudio, Maya is a light with flaring hexagonal shades, whose form allows several shades to be grouped together to create different geometric formations. Alternatively, these can be hung individually. The light’s shape recalls a honeycomb pattern. As a pattern derived from nature applied to a light, this fuses a sensual, organic beauty with a strictly geometric, rational form.
Made of a folded sheet of steel, Maya is available in strong colours, which emphasise the piece’s formal quality. What’s more, the colours of the interior and exterior of the shades are different and create a dramatic contrast which guarantees the piece takes centre-stage in any interior.
We’ll also soon be unveiling other products by Almerich created in collaboration with such designers as Christian Vivanco (who has created the company’s table-cum-lamp, Alux), Herme Ciscar and Mónica García.
Almerich is a Valencia-based firm. Since it was founded in 1943, it’s established itself as a highy respected brand in the world of decorative, classical lighting. It has also launched a contemporary lighting division, and is now equally famous for its modern lights, thanks to its commitment to good design and excellent quality.
Mermelada Estudio is a recently established Barcelona-based studio which specialises in industrial design. It creates products which are innovative yet harmonise easily with their surroundings. Crucial to the studio’s philosophy is the value it places on conceptual research when developing its pieces.
