Reused History by PCM Design
A brand that makes pieces from classic materials that can be recycled.
PCM Design is a new furniture and homeware company based in Madrid. Its director is the architect Paloma Cañizares, who came up with the idea of making pieces with a historical resonance.
Cañizares collaborates with two designers: Slovakian-born Tomas Kraj, who has a studio in Lausanne, Switzerland, and Swiss-born Dunja Weber, who lives in Milan.
One of PCM’s most notable pieces is Reused History, which sprang from a collaboration between Kral and PCM and La Real Fábrica de Cristales (Royal Glass Factory) at La Granja de San Ildefonso en Segovia, in central Spain. This venture aims to raise awareness of the heritage of handcrafted Spanish glass from a contemporary perspective and give support to the factory, one of the three remaining ones in Europe that still makes handblown glass using techniques dating from the 18th century. The project comprises three vases and a set of glassware made using moulds for late 19th-century disused oil lamps from the factory’s archive. An interesting dialogue has thus been forged between the new and old via this unusual intervention and the making of these decorative objects.
These pieces were recently customised as part of a special project for hip Milan gallery Rossana Orlandi.
