CrusTable, by Andreu Carulla Studio

Barking up the right tree.

Andreu Carulla´s limited-edition CrusTable, created for his brand Eco Luxury Editions, is an example of how one man´s waste can become another man´s fine dining.

The designer often wondered what became of bark when it´s stripped from trunks being prepared for timber merchants and carpenters-and soon discovered the answer was sawdust. So he arranged to take delivery of discarded bark and work it into unique table tops. “These barks pieces provide interesting colour combinations and textures”- says Carulla, whose studio is based in Banyoles, near Gerona.

The production process requires a steady hand because the bark pieces are not thick. The top surface has to be planed to a smooth finish, while the underneath is left raw. To give a tables modern look, Carulla designed stainless steel legs that resemble the branches of a tree.

And although the economic situation means many manufacturers are under pressure to do what is most cost effective, Carulla thinks there is a general will towards doing the right thing environmentally.
