Young company Rocío Moreno, whose fabrics are known for being very colourful, opted for very modern-looking embroidered silks featuring Ottoman, Turkish and Oriental motifs. It’s thanks to the artistry and experience of this designer (founder of the interior design studio Meridian) – coupled with her close relationships with skilled Indian artesans struck up over 14 years ago – that these fabrics are so original and sophisticated. Indeed, these textiles are entirely hand-crafted.
The star piece at the Gancedo stand was the ART collection dreamt up by Catalan artist Pepa Poch. Its cotton and polyester fabrics – inspired by her canvas called Eau de France – are designed to evoke a typical Provençal landscape. To that end, Poch has used earthy yellows, browns, golds, offset by cooler but equally Mediterranean blues and lavender shades.
In 2010, Ybarra y Serret celebrates its 10th year in the textile design field. To celebrate this, it has launched updated versions of its best-selling fabrics. Coqui Ybarra, the firm’s founder, has given a fresh twist to its 10 best-selling fabrics, including Akademia, Ninfea and Ottelo, with new colourways and accents. Equally eye-catching, however, were the company’s decorative, highly original wallpapers also on display.
As for Lizzo’s spectacular stand, three attractive collections in particular caught our eye: Provenza, Ducale and Skyline. Provenza (meaning Provence) is inspired by the French region, and, unsurprisingly, it feels warm and romantic. A collection of rich fabrics inspired by 15th-century Venetian palaces, Ducale reinterprets classical interiors and gives them a modern twist thanks to its contemporary colourways.
Skyline, by contrast, comprises metallic fabrics influenced by New York architecture; these feel cosmopolitan, urban and contemporary, and have Art Deco undertones.
Güell Lamadrid has experimented with new ideas this year, but, as you’d expect from this company, these are very decorative and contemporary. The Down Town collection, with its stripes in neutral tones, stood out in particular, as did the pleasingly smooth fabrics in two other collections – Lotus and Meridian.
Tejidos Bages, a well-known specialist in linens, unveiled a collection that oozed charm and freshness. Its elegance and versatility will ensure that it’s suited both to domestic interiors as to hotels and restaurants.
Teixidors, another important specialist in linens and other noble materials, once again launched some very special fabrics. Each piece by Teixidors is unique, a one-off because it’s woven by hand using a traditional wooden loom. What’s more, the company’s policy is to employ people with learning dificulties to help them to integrate into society. This year, one of its main investments has been an environmentally friendly collection.
Meanwhile, this year Gastón y Daniela launched bold prints on velvets or on smooth or textured linens in a wide spectrum of colours as well as new designs for a special outdoor fabrics collection which convincingly mimics silk. It also unveiled new textiles with an ‘ethnic’ flavour, such as the Sidonia collection.
Finally, this year, Becara, consistent with its signature style, displayed fabrics which, oriental or ‘ethnic’ in flavour, had beige backgrounds teamed with on-trend shades like mauve and purple.
