JM Ferrero
Jose Manuel Ferrero graduated only seven years ago, but he has been extraordinarily prolific ever since. His company, Estudi Hac, designs lighting, furniture, bathroom fittings, bed linen, interior design and graphics for many high-profile companies.
After studying industrial design, Ferrero moved to
Due surely to his grounding in industrial design, Ferrero takes a very down-to-earth approach: ‘I try to ensure my design meets certain technical, functional and cultural needs.’ For him, innovation is all: ‘I try to offer innovative solutions by using new materials and forms.’ But he’s also interested in design’s psychological impact. ‘Design should provoke a series of pleasant emotions in the user.’ But he’s not just interested in hardcore functionalism or design’s psychological impact.Clearly, a mix of hip styling and humour - as the products on his NUDE stand demonstrated - turns him on. Take his nun lamps - inspired by the wimples of Sixties nuns. There’s a Sister lamp and a Mother Superior light which has a black wimple. These are witty on various levels: when you switch them on (their light pulls are made of black rosary beads), it’s as if you’re encouraged to see the light.
Another design is his rocking chair - made by prestigious Spanish company Do+Ce - whose quirk is that only one arm is upholstered. ‘The cushioned arm is there to rest your arm on if you fall asleep,' he explains. 'It's inspired by the archetypal grandmother's chair.’
Ferrero approaches design from so many angles – the sentimental, humorous, conceptual, functional, subversive and simply stylish and hip - that it’s hard to predict how his work will develop. And it’s all the more interesting for that.
During his professional career, he has obtained several special mentions; the most recent is the nomination to International Designs Awards Elle Deco. Ferrero´s works have been selected for many international exhibitions such as Tokyo Designers Week, Global Edit Wallpaper or Greenhouse Stockholm Furniture Fair ….
Some of his clients in the field of the industrial design are the following companies: Punt Mobles, Do+Ce, Complements Contract, Vasic-Home, Novum, Gandia Blasco …
