Round Chrome, Marco Bisenzi, 2011
The B Lux group is made up of the subsidiaries B Lux SA and Vanlux SA, both of which meet their customers’ needs for contemporary lighting created by renowned designers. Their products’ distinctive identity, combined with the high quality of their execution, give the business, which has a 30-year history, its strong foundation.
In 2005, after specialising for 25 years in decorative lighting, the group decided to launch two new ranges – its Tech collection, comprising technical-cum-decorative lights with a clear technical functionality, and its Urban range, which consists of outdoor lighting for domestic and public spaces.
As for the future, the company intends to continue creating new lighting which marries the latest technology with sustainability, as is the case with the LED lights used in its decorative lighting.
The B Lux group has its own factory based in Vizcaya in the Basque Country, which boasts very high productivity. Since it was founded, the group has collaborated with high-profile, internationally renowned architects and designers.
Notable among the projects undertaken by the company in recent years is one created in collaboration with architect Frank Gehry for the winery of Vinos Herederos at the hotel Marqués de Riscal in Alava, northern Spain.
This resulted in a highly original pendant light and wall light which illuminate the entrance and corridors.
B Lux has undertaken many projects in the US. One example is the Clarendon Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona, where various of its outdoor Kanpazar lights were installed on its terrace. Another notable design is the iconic project for a pedestrian bridge, designed by Zaha Hadid, which gave access to the site of Expo Zaragoza 2008. For this, B Lux created Tubular, an outdoor lighting system that forms continuous lines. This not only illuminates the point of access to the bridge but also serves as a walkway light, a railing and even a bench.
Quintessentially B Lux products include the Regina lighting system, which encompasses table, standard, pendant and wall lamps, all designed by Jorge Pensi in 1987, and the 1996 Veroca collection of fluorescent ceiling lights comprising a diffusor made of fabric which allows the user to customise it in countless ways, designed by Miguel Angel Cicanda. Also typical of the brand is the 2006 Kanpazar light, which represents an important turning point in outdoor lighting. Designed by Jon Santacoloma, this has received a huge number of awards and national and international mentions in recognition of its innovative nature and great creative and aesthetic value.
More recent designs include Marco Bisenzi’s Round Chrome piece of 2011 – a new form of lighting that combines energy-efficiency, functionality and good looks. It’s a great example of an LED light incorporated into decorative lighting. The materials used here are worth highlighting: the light’s mirror-like finish makes the objects reflected on it look ultra-3D – hence the design’s accompanying slogan, Light is aRound.
