In the last six months of 2016, Spanish interior and product design studio Lagranja executed no less than four different interior design projects in Singapore. Quite an achievement for a design studio that exports Barcelona’s creative Mediterranean spirit all over the world.

The first project is brand-new restaurant “FOC Sentosa”, which opened in September on Sentosa Island’s Palawan Beach. In a Mediterranean beach bar revamped to go with Singapore lifestyle, it features hammocks and lounge chairs, and a menu that ranges from grilled fish to paella and from tropical fruit cocktails to sangria. This is Singapore’s second FOC restaurant. The first was opened in late 2014 by Michelin-star chef Nandu Jubany and mixologist Dario Nocentini, and is now a city landmark. Lagranja were responsible for both the architecture and the interior design. The terrace, beach and tropical garden are decked out with Lagranja’s specially-created “Bold” outdoor furniture collection, featuring sofas, easy chairs, loungers, stools and seats that will soon be available on the Lagranja Collection catalogue.

A month later, Nandu Jubany opened his third culinary location in Singapore. His “Pim Pam by FOC” restaurant is in one of the most attractive parts of the city on Orchard Road, and oozes contemporary cosmopolitan charm. Each item of furniture and decor has been created ad hoc, lending continuity to the FOC discourse. Particularly striking is Lagranja’s transformation of original structural elements, like the columns they have turned into gigantic Capgrossos, oversized papier-maché heads donned in Catalan parades and celebrations. Or the lamp that conjures up Els Castellers, the performers who build amazing human towers at typical Catalan festivals.

Also in Singapore in 2016 Lagranja designed “The Other Room” cocktail lounge –situated beneath the luxury Marriot Hotel – and Quaich bar. Specially designed for the project, “The Other Room” has become the hotel icon. Lagranja has moulded “candle” lamps with bases and shades from a single piece of real wax, sculpted stools from solid wood and included a giant cocktail shaker that hangs from ceiling to floor and has become the focus of the bar’s graphic identity. For Quaich Bar, Lagranja delivered not only the interior design but minimalist Nordic seaters (bespoke stools, couches and chairs) and high tables, alongside other miscellaneous items.

Headed by Gabriele Schiavon and Gerard Sanmartí who founded the company in 2002, Lagranja is a multidisciplinary design studio that focuses on the creation of interiors, products and temporary installations. The Barcelona-based firm consolidated growth in 2010 with a new office in Hong Kong. Lagranja has received a host of different accolades, including the Red Dot Award (2007), the IIDA Excellence Award from the International Interior Design Association-USA (2009), the IDEA Award (2008) and the Silver Delta Award (2012). Apart from its work in Singapore, its latest projects include the Madera Serviced apartments in Hong Kong, the Populist Brewery in Istanbul, Cooking Tableware for Toshiba in Japan and Nandu crockery in Spain for Sargadelos.
