An old warehouse which occupies over 600sq m has been converted into BD Barcelona Design’s new showroom and retail outlet. Encouraged by its recent successes, this furniture company, which is on the verge of celebrating 40 years in business, has transformed an old space into a place where people from the design world will want to congregate.
BD Barcelona’s first shop also brimmed with history. Opened in 1972, its owners created arresting shop windows and generated a huge buzz in the city at the time, so much so that a reporter for city daily newspaper La Vanguardia was moved to write a nice article which mentioned that the company had opened a new shop, even though the writer ‘didn’t know exactly what for’. It was the first time the headboard from an 18th-century bed printed on a cardboard poster could be seen side by side with a mattress filled with water rather than covered with wool.
For years, BD Barcelona kept producing more designs yet its premises remained small. From 1979 until this year, the company occupied a shop on the city’s Mallorca street, which once received the National Prize for the Restoration of Historic Buildings, awarded by the Ministry of Culture.
The opening of the new showroom – christened BD Barcelona Design Gallery – marks a turning point in the history of a company which has always been committed to innovation and adventurous design. In this new space, the objects displayed stand out as though they were in a museum, spotlight as they are by dramatic lighting which accentuates the decor’s theatrical quality. Pieces you can enjoy looking at there include the Cabinet Tout Va Bien, designed by Antoine et Manuel, The Narcissist dressing table by Shanghai-based designers Neri & Hu, the Lounger armchair by Jaime Hayón and Table B, designed by Konstantin Grcic, which scooped the Red Dot Best of Best prize in 2011.
BD’s prestige rests in its portfolio that boasts an abundance of works by such titans of contemporary design as Ettore Sottsass, Ross Lovegrove, Javier Mariscal, Óscar Tusquets and Alfredo Häberli, among others. BD is also internationally famous, thanks to having been the first company to manufacture furniture by Antoni Gaudí, as well as designs by Salvador Dalí.
