Materia is a coherently designed space in Barcelona created by Beatrice Askanazy. The soft furnishings, furniture and accessories displayed here all share the same philosophy: a love of natural fibres, pleasing materials, the hand-crafted, the unique, the timeless, the absence of any dominant trend.
Spanish company Tiexidors, which is based in Terrassa, near Barcelona, has occupied this space in order to display its entire range of goods. Materia isn’t just designed to be a mere shop for selling home fabrics but a place where customers instantly experience the sensibility of and philosophy behind Materia and Teixidors. It gives visitors an insight into how a domestic space can connect with nature, the hand-crafted, a sense of continuity, serenity, warmth – all perennial attributes of Teixidors’ collections.
In Askanazy’s words, ‘We’re not interested in trendy ítems, classified as either contemporary or classical, but in pieces that dovetail with our idea of all things natural. The pieces chosen complement each other, don’t detract from each other. They are life-enhancing, transcend mere trends and fit into the present and future: they feel current today and will feel current tomorrow.’
Teixidors has developed a way of working and its own style which radically differs from any other textiles company operating in Spain today. It was founded in 1983 not as a business but as a non profit-making cooperative that provides employment and social integration to people with learning difficulties.
