Spanish outdoor furniture and rug company Vondom opened its first flagship store in the South Korean capital of Seoul in January.
The desire to enter this market lay behind the decision to open a new shop there. The store occupies over 140 sq m of retail space in the city centre, and is surrounded by cafés, libraries and shopping centres. The way both the furniture and different decorative lighting effects are displayed throughout give the space a touch of originality and sophistication. Various inviting, cosy zones in the shop entice customers to enjoy this Spanish firm’s designs over a delicious, frothy cup of coffee.
Vondom plans to open new showrooms in different continents. It will begin by opening its next new shop in New York in May to coincide with the city’s design fair, ICFF. The shop is part of Vondom’s strategy of international expansion. Indeed, the firm is currently negotating setting up a subsidiary in China, where it has already established a strong presence with two warehouses and a franchise which Vondom considers key to its entry into the Asian market. What’s more, this year Vondom plans to open several showrooms in China — in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Shenyang, Qingdao, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Suzhou and Xiamen. Moreover, Vondom also has its own space within the showroom of its distributor in Taiwan.
Vondom grew by 15 per cent in 2013, thanks to an increase in its exports which constitute over 70 per cent of the company’s turnover.
