Natural materials, energy-efficient manufacturing, hand-crafting techniques, recycled and recyclable products, all of which encourage the saving of energy… There are many ways companies and designers can take up the increasingly urgent struggle to protect the environment. Firms such as Arxe, Usame, Dvelas and Sanserif argue for a philosophy based on recycling and salvaging materials. Some of Mobles 114, RS Barcelona’s, and Martín Azúa’s designs are also completely recycled.

 

Today’s most eco lamps embrace LED technology, the minimisation of light sources, versatility and the use of natural materials. What’s more, the ideas of Vibia, Arturo Alvarez and La Mediterránea, for example, are also impeccably well-designed.

 

The use of natural textiles, recycled glass, paper pulp and reclaimed wood result in pieces with an appealing purity and a hand-made, one-off look. Gan Rugs, Naturtex, Teixidors, La Mediterránea, Onadis Recicla reveal their most eco collections, while Martí Guixé and Tomás Alonso show us how cutting-edge design needn’t be compromised by a commitment to sustainability.
