It’s lighter and more stylised than the original version.
The company BD Barcelona Design has created and manufactured a new, improved version of its classic Gaulino chair, designed by Oscar Tusquets Blanca. Its main improvement or refinement has been the removal of the crossbar that joined the two front legs of the earlier version. The resulting design is more lightweight and stylised. The frame and backrest is made of varnished, natural, solid ash or stained in an oak shade or black, while the elegantly simple seat is made of leather in a natural colour, a honey tone or black.
Designed by Tusquets in 1987, Gaulino – which nods aesthetically both to the work of architect Antoni Gaudí and furniture designer Carlo Mollino, hence the name Gaulino – is one of the most high-profile pieces of Spanish, 20th-century design. Although it looks handcrafted, it was the first wooden piece by the Spanish designer – who considers it one of his best designs – to be industrially produced.
Barcelona-born Tusquets describes himself as an architect by training, who then adapted to become a designer, a painter by vocation and a writer out of a desire to make friends – the prototype of a truly rounded artist. BD Barcelona was co-founded in 1972 by Tusquets, who soon began collaborating with the company as a designer. This was his launchpad for becoming a designer of furniture and homeware, which later saw him win Spain’s National Design Award in 1989, while such prestigious museums as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris include some of his pieces in their collections.
BD Barcelona is globally renowned for holding exclusive world rights on making Art Nouveau furniture by Gaudí and pieces by Dalí, as well as for its cutting-edge furniture and lighting, often created by such internationally famous designers as Ross Lovegrove, Alfredo Häberli, Konstantin Grcic and Jaime Hayón.
