He creates Roulette, a swivelling chair.
The veteran Finnish designer Eero Aarnio has created another new piece for outdoor furniture company Vondom – a chair called Roulette.
According to its creator, the most common and interesting yet difficult thing to design is a chair. When he began to design this one, he thought of the idea of a leg that’s part of a body and of the possibility of designing it using rotational moulding. He’s always loved rocking, moving chairs and their oscillating movement which was easy to recreate thanks to rotation-moulding.
This saw him design a chair whose frame morphs into a leg, which allows the sitter to rock his or her body and swivel in all directions, thanks to its foot touching the floor. The chair’s rotating motion inspired its name, Roulette. What’s more, the height of its armrests gives the sitter stability when making the chair move and provides a good support while he or she is seated.
This is the second piece Aarnio has created for Vondom. At the beginning of this year, Vondom unveiled his other piece Peacock, a fun and symbolic bird-shaped plant holder – the first collaboration between the company and this prestigious designer, who is internationally famous for his iconic, 1960s, plastic designs, the Ball, Bubble and Pastil chairs.
Roulette aside, Vondom has launched its first collections of carpets designed for outdoors and highly original, very contemporary, well-designed furniture collections, such as Biophilia, created by the designer Ross Lovegrove, Ufo by Ora Ïto and F3 designed by Fabio Novembre.
