Jaime Hayón, once known as the enfant terrible of Spanish design, continues to be extraordinarily prolific. Having visited his exhibition, called Spazio Hayón, at the Milan Furniture Fair this year, we at Interiors from Spain can vouch for this.
This year, Hayón launched three pieces, giving them global exposure – a multifunctional chair for Danish firm &Tradition, a mobile phone for Japanese company Au by KDDI and a wristwatch for Orolog, a new firm co-founded by Hayón and Ian Lowe, which creates innovative Swiss watches.
His elegant, simple chair for &Tradition has curved contours that snugly envelop the sitter, rendering the design simultaneously comfortable and ultra-modern. The fact that Hayón has designed a mobile phone and wristwatch suggests he is keen to explore a whole new world – that of technology. The phone places great emphasis on design, while fusing analogue and digital elements. The idea behind Orolog, meanwhile, is to produce contemporary designs which are nevertheless based on the classical tradition of Swiss watches.
