Designed for Vilagrasa, it’s a multifunctional unit for charging up your mobile and portable devices and for storing your belongings.
Industrial designer Jordi Blasi has just unveiled his latest creation –Islands, designed for the firm Vilagrasa. This multifunctional piece can be arranged as groups resembling ‘islands’ in offices or public spaces. Islands can be used to hang up your coat, recharge your mobile, tablet or laptop and stow away other stuff.
Blasi’s design is made of steel tubes and perforated sheets in various colours. The main sheet provides a surface to hang many components — a coat hook, magazine rack, filing cabinet, letterbox, pencil-holder, safe-deposit box, acoustic panel and containers for recycling paper and organic waste. These elements are attached to the main panel with nylon hooks which can be repositioned according to the user’s specific needs. The panel incorporates an electrically powered space, power cables and customised modules which can be made to configure data, phone, High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) and USB connections. Islands comes in two versions: with height-adjustable legs or castors (which transform it into a mobile storage unit). This versatile design can incorporate more than one panel, while its panel or panels can be positioned vertically or horizontally.
In 2008, after working as a freelance designer in product, packaging and furniture design for various studios, Jordi Blasi set up his own business. Since then, Vilagrasa aside, he’s worked for such homeware companies as Leds C4, Pedret and Grisverd.
Founded in 1957, Vilagrasa manufactures all sorts of designs, including office accessories and waste bins for large public spaces –airports, train stations and shopping centres. Its products allow people to put their stamp on any space because they’ve been created following a rigorous analysis of what exact requirements they need to meet in that space. When developing its products, the company – which exports its goods to over 22 countries – collaborates with high-profile designers whom it regularly works with.
