Nanimarquina launches Natural

A rug collection which immerses us in the beauty of the natural world.

Spanish company Nanimarquina’s new rug collection, Natural, reintroduces us to the beauty of nature.

The collection is made using an exclusive selection of natural fibres – nettle, silk, Afgan wool and jute. These are twisted into a continuous thread, a highly labour-intensive, manual process that enriches the design and brings to each rug a lovely, soft, unique texture. The entire collection is made using biodegradable, chemical-free cleaning products, which underlines the company’s commitment to protecting the environment.

Nani Marquina, who has created rugs for 25 years, enriches our lives with the idea that true innovation springs from designing by making use – responsibly and sustainably – of what is available to us in our environment. This new collection comprises seven rugs created following four traditions of hand-crafting – found in dhurries, hand-knotting, kelims and handwoven sumaks. All these reveal the fibre’s natural colour or a variation on it, in line with the desire to create a natural, pleasing environment.

These tones vary from lighter ones like ochre and cream to darker, reddish ones or black. The threads are made and rugs woven by hand. This makes each piece slightly different in terms of colour, as does the natural properties of the individual fibres used, which make the designs yet more unique.

Since it was founded in Barcelona in 1987, Nanimarquina has designed rugs and textiles that also involve placing great importance on researching raw materials and manufacturing methods. These factors push the boundaries in terms of aesthetics, ensuring the company’s designs are also works of art. Many well-known designers, architects and artists have collaborated on the creation of its collections, including Javier Mariscal, Martí Guixé, Gerard Moliné, Cristian Zuzunaga, Emiliana Studio, Tord Boontje, Ron Arad, Michael Lin, Sybilla and Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec.
