With its latest collection, the Barcelona-based firm Nanimarquina has paid homage to Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002), one of the best-known artists of the 20th century. The company’s new Chillida range, based on a chronological collection of the artist’s works, ranging from his 1948 work Figura Humana (Human Figure) to Collage of 1966.
These reflect the process behind his art before he created his most famous sculpture, El Peine de Viento (Comb of the Wind), in San Sebastián. The collection also includes rugs based on two drawings called Manos (Hands), of the 90s, and his piece, Gravitación (Gravitation) of 1993 and 1994, which saw him create a new form of sculpture made with paper in relief.
All these works have been translated on to rugs with utmost accuracy. Each was handmade using different techniques and materials such as wool, silk and moiré to give the rugs texture, help convey the different qualities of each work and confer on each the value it deserves.
To undertake these designs, the Catalan rug company collaborated at all stages with the Chillida family, and any institutions connected with the work of the author.
The collection was unveiled at the Milan Furniture Fair last April on a stand designed to recreate a museum in order to extol the pieces’ artistic richness. This launch coincided with the celebration of the company’s 25th anniversary.
Just when you think nothing new can be invented, Nanimarquina has wowed us – again – by transforming rugs into works of art.
