A new, cutting-edge lighting company that launches with three collections Anwar, Aballs and Alistair.
A new Spanish decorative lighting company, Parachilna, has just been founded with the aim of proffering luxury products. In this case, luxury is taken to mean honestly designed, hand-crafted pieces and an appreciation of noble materials. Bound up with this philosophy is a commitment to creating collections in collaboration with designers from all over the world.
The company’s name is inspired by an Australian city situated beside a railway line that once connected with the ancient railway line of Ghan, which crosses Australia, from the north (Darwin) to the south (Adelaide) and travels through the desert. The city was named after the Afghani camel-drivers who were hired to cross the as yet unexplored Australian desert in the 19th century. These days, no train stops in Parachilna, but the old station is still intact. By appropriating this name, the Spanish firm wants to pay homage to the faith and passion of these men with whom it so closely identifies with.
The company has made its first splash with three new lighting collections which exude light and passion. First up is Anwar, created by Stephen Burks, and Aballs, designed by Jaime Hayón, both of which were shown this year at the Milan Furniture Fair. This was followed soon after by the Alistair collection by designer Jordi Veciana. All three designs make a virtue of their hand-crafted quality — one of the company’s hallmarks.
Anwar is an exercise in virtuoso metalwork, and came as a challenge to the company’s metalworkers who were required to weld together 96 steel rods to create a sphere measuring 20cm in diameter, each with a different curvature, ensuring that all its components could fit together. Aballs is formed from globes of hand-blown glass and comes as a chandelier, pendant light or table light, all of which cast a warm glow, making them perfect for both domestic and contract interiors. Alistair stands out for its simple, elegant, timeless design and hand-crafted quality reflected in its hand-blown glass diffuser and the way in which the metal frame is manufactured. The resulting design is ultra-simple and its mechanical elements very robust.
