Mélange
Nanimarquina recently unveiled its kilim collection Mélange, created by fashion designer Sybilla, who has once again collaborated with the internationally renowned Spanish rug company.
Mélange fuses tradition and modernity, a fashion sensibility and homeware, craftsmanship, good design and a look both to the past and future. The collection comprises 20 pieces and four designs: Zoom and Stripes, which play with super-sized graphic motifs; Color, a study in combining large blocks of colour in different proportions, and Pattern — geometric cream, black and red patterns. Accompanying the rugs are some coordinating upholstered stools, which accentuate the collection’s Far Eastern vibe — after all, all the pieces are either low-level or lie at floor level. And, thanks to the striking simplicity of its classical motifs and geometric patterns, Mélange updates the traditional kilim, thereby reconciling a coherent, contemporary aesthetic with ancient handmade techniques perfected over centuries in Pakistan.
Sybilla began her career as a fashion designer in Madrid in 1983, then became internationally known when she showed her first catwalk collection in Milan in 1987, which was a soaraway success. Since 1989, her collections have been widely distributed in Japan where they are hugely popular. Her designs stand out for their elegance and sensuality, sophisticated pattern-cutting and subtle, exquisite fabrics.
As ever, Nanimarquina is committed to initiating innovative, creative projects which have scooped many international prizes. Examples include London-based design duo Doshi Levien’s Rabari 1 rug, which has received, among other awards, the Elle Deco International Design Award this year for Best Floor Covering, as well as the design Earth from the company’s Natural collection, which won a Wallpaper* Design Award in 2014 in the Best Rug category.
