Design In/From Spain. Winter issue 2016
Hello and welcome to our winter issue – it's hard to believe another year has rocketed by! And 2016 has been a very good year for Spanish design, with new showroom openings around the world and top awards brought back to head offices.
Outdoor furniture company Vondom is one brand that's been growing steadily over recent years, and to cater for the growth in the US market it's opened a second showroom here, this time in Los Angeles. Meanwhile global quartz surface brand Cosentino has opened its latest Cosentino City in the Clerkenwell area of London. Congratulations to both.
We bring you a round-up of this year's design awards – call it the definitive who-won-what-where. And we have a tile trends forecast for 2017/18 from the organisers of Cersaie, the leading tile trade fair where around 100 Spanish manufacturers exhibited.
We have an in-depth focus on the Spanish outdoor furniture sector, which is in very rude health. Cristina Simón from manufacturer Expormim has an explanation for why Spain's high end outdoor furniture companies have been doing so well: sales are in direct proportion to openings of luxury boutique hotels around the world.
Don't miss our company profile of Cosentino, one of Spain's largest privately-owned companies. Based in Almería in south east Spain, this global brand is fascinating, with its commitment to develop innovative surface materials for architectural projects as well as continuing to provide a wide choice of quartz worktops for the residential market. Turnover this year stands at 730 million euros and by the end of next year Cosentino is aiming for an annual turnover of one billion euros.
And the subject of our interview slot is Jorge Herrera, one of the country's most in-demand industrial designers whose studio is based in Valencia. He tells us about his collaboration with the Stratta coated foam furniture brand, for which he's design and art director. He also shares in insights into what makes for good design - and he has some advice for young people wanting to make a career in industrial design.
With best wishes,
Julián Izquierdo
