Barrows is a South African agency that is growing its business in the US. It took on 215 m2 of office space in an Art Deco skyscraper in the Soho district, and as it was a completely blank and empty space the team decided they wanted a vibrant, colourful, informal workplace that reflected both America and the African continent.
Interior designer Ghislaine Viñas – who grew up in Durban – undertook the project and she says she relished the opportunity to create a really quite avant-garde work environment. Fun but functional were the watchwords and Viñas took inspiration from the incredible flora and fauna of her native South Africa and chose a blue/green/turquoise colour palette.
The Barrows office space opens into a generous lift-lobby that also works as the reception and a place where staff can work. It offers a cubby-hole for private phone calls, framed seating with side tables, a hanging rope installation over the ceiling and bold colours. Those colours are picked up by Viccarbe's Season mini seating pouffes in turquoise, designed by Piero Lissoni.
