The streets of Barcelona, as in any other big city, are constantly being transformed, and for this reason there is a need for flexible and durable urban street furniture that can adapt to any urban space, and make it more attractive. And among the most innovative elements to be found on Barcelona’s streets is the Flexible Plaza parklet. A modular, adaptable, extensible system created by urban and outdoor furniture company Durbanis that creates comfortable areas around strategic spaces such as terraces, schools, health centers and local businesses. The urban project for the implementation of Flexible Plaza has been developed by Leku Studio.
Flexible Plaza is a modular and durable urban element that allows the flexible and reversible extension of sidewalks. A platform and planter system that can adapt to a variety of layouts, both in alignment with parking lanes and at chamfers and intersections. It has been designed with the aim of ensuring universal accessibility by creating environmentally comfortable spaces around strategic environments such as terraces or school facilities. Flexible Plaza has been a pioneer in the transformation of spaces previously occupied by cars into roadside terraces for bars and restaurants.
The Flexible Plaza model is based on the construction of a series of independent modular elements that guarantee flexibly assembly, the extensibility of the system by the addition of modules in both longitudinal and transverse directions.
The possibility of leveling the platform and adapting it to the slope of the street is guaranteed thanks to a patented adjustment system that allows the height of the panels to be adjusted to the same level as the sidewalk. In such a way that the parklet is totally practicable and does not present any limitation in terms of accessibility.
