As the architects of El Celler de Can Roca, which received three Michelin stars and is considered one of the best restaurants in the world, the Roca brothers have now expanded their gastronomic universe by opening a second establishment in Girona named Normal.
"Normal is the most direct way to get to know what, for the Roca people, is ordinary, logical, natural," explains Andreu Carulla, the designer responsible for this space. "And what's normal for them is great for the rest of the world," he says.
Noble materials, neutral colors and Mediterranean lines are the basis of Carulla's proposal, with which he wanted to bring diners closer to the meaning of the concept of 'normal' in the language of the Roca brothers, so that, through the touch of a handmade tile, the soft back of a chair or the warm light of a lamp, they can feel the authenticity of their kitchen and their cellar.
"I really enjoyed stepping outside the boundaries of industrial design to sign an interior design project for the first time," says Carulla, who, in addition to conceptualizing the interior design of the space, has created many of the furniture and lighting pieces in it. For the Normal Experience, he created each of the elements in collaboration with the local artisans, including the handcrafted ceramic lamps, the handmade chairs, the porcelain plates, the tables made of recycled glass from El Celler de Can Roca and the handmade tile shelves set up to accommodate the 300 wine labels of the menu.
The designer and the Roca brothers have been collaborating successfully since 2009. Andreu Carulla is an Industrial Designer who creates objects that combine beauty and functionality, craftsmanship and the latest technology, always influenced by the Mediterranean. In addition to heading his own design studio, he is currently creative director of El Celler de Can Roca, Isist Atelier and Calma, among other projects.
