Crossing the border between Amsterdam and London now takes you on an architectural journey from the 19th century to the 21st. The new Eurostar UK terminal, located in Amsterdam’s historic Central Station—a national landmark designed by Pierre Cuypers in 1889—has been reimagined by Superimpose Architecture and ZJA. Their renovation restores the station to its former glory while projecting it into the future. And the redesigned terminal also features furniture by the Spanish brand Sellex.
The renovation quadruples the space of the old terminal and combines advanced technologies, such as automated controls and a “cloud ceiling” dynamic lighting system, with an interior design inspired by the connection between land and sky. The design evokes the landscapes of the Dutch and British Golden Ages, while guiding travelers through the space with clarity and calm.
To complement this setting, the Superimpose team selected the AERO Bench by Sellex as the centerpiece of the waiting area. Nearly 30 benches, arranged in five- and six-seat modules, showcase a freestanding natural aluminum frame, solid oak seats and backrests, aluminum armrests, and integrated power outlets.
“The AERO Bench fits perfectly with our vision of a space defined by calm and cohesion,” explain the architects at Superimpose. Its elegant and understated silhouette adds warmth to the terminal’s minimalist design and complements the dynamic curve of Eurostar’s new “Spark” logo. Beyond its aesthetics, the AERO Bench delivers comfort, durability, and accessibility: built-in charging sockets let travelers charge their devices while they wait, and its modular design works equally well for individuals or groups.
This project shows how timeless design can engage in dialogue with heritage, creating spaces that honor history while embracing innovation. In that balance between past and future, the AERO Bench finds its natural place.
