Claudia Pérez and Pedro Ochando founded the design studio PerezOchando in 2014. It is made up of a team of product and graphic designers who work with clients to address new creative challenges.
Their field of work focuses on product, graphic, and digital design, as well as art direction. Over the years, they have collaborated with design firms for the habitat sector, such as Inclass, Sancal, Marset, Point 1920, Missana, Joquer and Kendo Mobiliario, as well as companies from other sectors, including Roche Diagnostics, Faes Farma, Affinity Petcare, Carburos Metálicos, Banc Sabadell, Lavinia, Aguas de Barcelona, Zurich, GB Foods, McDonald’s, and Volkswagen.
We spoke with Pedro and Claudia about their studio, their way of working, their evolution, and their projects:
Interiors from Spain: What motivated you to found PerezOchando? What features define your studio?
PerezOchando: We came from working together in another studio, and at a certain point, we decided to go our own way. We had a good working dynamic and thought it would be a great opportunity.
At PerezOchando, we focus on solving our clients' needs. We believe in collaboration and dialogue, always prioritizing an approach where we contribute to the project without imposing our criteria.
Interiors from Spain: What are you most passionate about in design and how is it reflected in your creations?
PerezOchando: The most rewarding part is designing solutions that add value, whether to the object itself, to the company's portfolio, or to the end user. We’re interested in ensuring that our projects go beyond aesthetics and genuinely address a need
Interiors from Spain: You work in different areas of design, such as product, graphic, digital, and art direction. Which one do you feel more comfortable in? Is there a common thread that links them?
PerezOchando: We feel comfortable in all of them. We enjoy diversity and don’t limit ourselves to a single discipline. In the end, it all comes down to the same way of working: analyzing the client's needs and finding the best solution. Although the medium varies, the creative process remains similar. The biggest difference is the time: in product design, development is much longer than in other disciplines.
Interiors from Spain: How do you complement each other when working together? Could you describe your creative process from idea to product?
PerezOchando: Each of us has our own approach and way of tackling projects, and that enriches the final result. Claudia is more focused on graphic design, digital design, and art direction, while I focus on product design and art direction as well.
Our process starts with meetings with the client to understand their needs. From there, depending on the project, one of us takes the lead, and the rest of the team contributes their vision throughout the development. In some cases, we hold sharing sessions where everyone participates in the evolution of the project.
Interiors from Spain: What importance do you place on colors and shapes, and how is this reflected in your creations? What materials do you work with, and which ones would you like to experiment with?
PerezOchando: Shape, finishes, and colors are fundamental elements in our designs, as they help define the product’s identity and guide it in a specific direction.
When we have creative freedom, shape is a priority for us. As for color, we usually make proposals, although in many cases, it is the company that makes the final decision. In art direction, however, color takes on a central role, as it completely defines the identity of the project. In this area, we spend a lot of time carefully selecting colors and finishes to ensure they convey exactly what we want to communicate.
Interiors from Spain: Tell us about the evolution of the studio over the years. What changes have you noticed in your clients and the sectors you work with, and what solutions have you adopted?
PerezOchando: The studio has grown alongside our clients. One of the most significant changes we’ve observed is the expansion and professionalization of the companies we work with, as well as the impact of digital technology on the industry. To adapt to this evolution, at PerezOchando we’ve also increasingly professionalized our work and integrated new technologies into our daily operations, ensuring that we always provide up-to-date solutions that align with industry trends.
Interiors from Spain: Any project that has had a special impact on your career? Any you would like to work on?
PerezOchando: For us, working in product design with companies like Sancal, Inclass, or Marset has been very important. In addition, art direction for Naturtex, Inclass, and Point has given us great visibility and has been a challenge we’ve enjoyed.
We’d like to collaborate with many other companies—there are so many that it’s hard to choose just one. We are always open to new projects that allow us to keep growing and exploring new areas of design.
Interiors from Spain: And what designs are you currently working on? Will we see any in Milan?
PerezOchando: We are currently developing several products with different companies, although they are not scheduled to be presented in Milan this year. We’re also working on the communication for Inclass and Naturtex, designing their new catalogs and, for Naturtex, also preparing their stand.
