A wave of innovative projects is transforming urban mobility, led by Spanish designers, studios, and design consultancies such as Alegre Design, Alex Fernández Camps, Mormedi, Anima Design, Nacar Design, and Culdesac. These projects have been developed for companies specializing in urban mobility solutions, including Closca, BH, and urban furniture brand Durbanis.
Alegre Design has developed the YLUM charging line for electric vehicles. This line, featuring three models, combines user-centric design with a futuristic aesthetic, integrating interactive contour lighting and a unique visual language designed to meet the evolving needs of a rapidly changing marketplace.
Meanwhile, designer Alex Fernández Camps has created the NOMAD bike rack for Durbanis. Made from 100% recycled plastic, NOMAD reimagines bicycle security with a three-anchor point system and tubular structure reinforced with internal stainless-steel wiring. This design makes it resistant to vandalism while ensuring safe and easy installation.
Mormedi, a strategic design and innovation consultancy, is redefining urban mobility with two groundbreaking projects: the Pulse Bus and the 101 Modular Mobility vehicle. The Pulse Bus incorporates advanced technologies such as 360° LED screens, augmented reality, and interactive systems, while also providing dedicated storage for e-bicycles and e-scooters. Its design ensures accessibility for people with reduced mobility. In addition, the 101 Modular Mobility vehicle features a flexible, configurable system that allows it to adapt to various roles, from a taxi or ambulance to a delivery truck and beyond. This versatility optimizes resources while minimizing its environmental footprint.
Anima Design works closely with manufacturers of motorcycles, electric bicycles, scooters, and street furniture to promote more sustainable and efficient transportation in cities. Its recent projects include: the OSSBY GEO folding electric bicycle for Ossby and an automatic bicycle motor, developed in collaboration with the startup Niche-mobility. These innovations have received accolades at the Delta Awards, IF Awards, and European Design Awards.
Nacar Design, in collaboration with the BH team, has developed the GravelX 4.0, which won the 2024 Design & Innovation Award. This bike stands out for its exceptional combination of speed and comfort, setting a new standard in gravel bikes for both performance and versatility.
Finally, Closca, in collaboration with Culdesac, has revolutionized urban safety with its Closca foldable helmet. The helmet enables seamless interaction with transportation systems and city services. Its design has won international awards, including the Red Dot Design Award and the Delta de Oro, and it’s featured in the collections of prestigious museums around the world.
Cities are rapidly evolving to address the challenges of sustainability, accessibility, and intermodality. Spanish design demonstrates that anticipating the needs of future urban environments is essential in this sector.
