Calma unveils its Aruga collection

Super-comfortable chairs designed by Ferrán Serra.

Outdoor furniture company Calma recently unveiled its Aruga collection, designed by Ferran Serra. It comprises a harmonious seating range: armchair, loveseat, chaise longue, sofa and pouffe, whose upholstery is voluptuously plump and creased (‘aruga’ means crease in Spanish) – the result of an upholstery method that eschews visible seams.

This new collection steers clear of the hard, perfect look of straight lines in favour of curves and abundant volume. Aesthetics aside, the design seeks to stimulate feelings. Aruga is the result of a technical approach – the avoidance of seams – that becomes the design’s main aesthetic feature. This, in turn, gives its creases form and character. The frame for the backrest and bases is made of tubular, oven-painted aluminium.

Calma, a dynamic Catalan company, specialises in outdoor furniture and takes part in such trade fairs as Maison & Objet in Paris and garden trade fair Spoga+Gafa in Cologne, Germany. Its most acclaimed collections to date are called Menú, Gat and Cube – all designed by the studio Serraydelarocha, with which Calma collaborates closely.
