Jaime Hayón designs Japanese porcelain

The designer capture the spirit of ancient Japanese art but have a contemporary feel.

Mediterranean vibrancy met Japanese ceramic traditions when Jaime Hayón accepted an invitation to work with porcelain company Choemon, a small family-run business that has been making tableware and tea sets for generations. The style of ceramics it makes is known as Kutani, named after the village where it started. It´s characterized by the use of five colours and by covering the whole object with pattern.

Hayón designed the artwork for a collection of 120 pieces, after having immersed himself in Japanese culture. Hayón, who described this project as “a great challenge” says a lot of his inspiration came from the plethora of table accoutrements that surround Japanese dining. It was a novel experience for the Choemon company too, since Hayón was the first non-family member who´d come to work with it.
