A rug inspired by the written symbols used in universal communication, designed by Stephanie Goto.
Spanish rug company Now Carpets recently unveiled its new piece Language — designed by US-based architect and designer Stephanie Goto — in New York.
Language is inspired by written symbols used for universal communication that connects different people. Posing the question ‘What language do you speak?’, its pattern presents anyone who looks at it with a clear visual message and simple design. The beauty of this rug — made of a mix of 70 per cent wool and 30 per cent silk — lies in the different ways it can be interpreted.
Language is Now Carpets’ first collaboration with Goto, who was brought up in Tokyo and New York. It sees her join a pantheon of internationally renowned designers who’ve previously worked for the company, such as interior designer and industrial designer Francesc Rifé, Christian Ghion, Claudio Colucci, Michael Banks and Yumi Endo, among others.
Now Carpets works closely with local craftspeople and looms in India, Nepal and China, with all stages of its manufacturing process subjected to strict quality control. Its rugs grace many interiors such as those of the exclusive hotel W Barcelona, designed by architect Ricardo Bofill, and Valencia’s Hotel Caro, formerly the city’s Palacio del Marqués de Caro, a building with huge historical significance whose interiors were refurbished by Rifé’s studio.
