Daisalux is a leading manufacturer of emergency lighting. And the company says the less its products are noticed, the better.
* The following article is an excerpt from Design in/from Spain magazine for smartphones and tablets.
Emergency lighting is essential in public buildings, office blocks and on modes of transport - we have to be able to find our way out when the main lights fail. Yet emergency lighting is the unsung hero of the sector – few of us notice it's there, let alone praise the people who make it.
Daisalux doesn't mind; it prides itself on developing safety lighting that is so discreet it blends in with the general lighting scheme in a building. 'Our main objectives with an emergency lighting project are to achieve maximum integration into any architectural environment and provide lighting that won't fail', says marketing executive Mónica Rivas.
Daisalux, which has an annual turnover of around 25 million euros, is based in northern Spain and its MD is Ibai Fernández de Arróyabe, son of founder Jose Antonio de Arróyabe, who died in 2013. The company has 110 employees and its R&D team comprises some 30 engineers.
Rivas says research and development is key to the company's success and reputation, and has been since it was founded in the 1980s. 'We develop emergency lighting products that are technically advanced, energy efficient and which don't impinge on the interior design – so they have to be unobtrusive. And because every situation is different, we design each system according to the client's needs'.
