DESIGN IN/FROM SPAIN
Welcome to our Autumn issue, which is packed with the latest from Spain's design scene. We've got reviews of the recent US trade fairs – ICFF, HD Expo and Neocon – where Spanish brands were a strong presence; and we reveal the winners of the country's prestigious National Design Prize, as well as winners of Lamp's international lighting design competition.
See the news pages to find out about Peronda's innovative new tile products, while congratulations are due to office furniture company Forma 5 which has been awarded Ecodesign accreditation.
We've got a round- up of some major projects Spanish companies have been working on, such as Figueras' work on the Philharmonie concert hall in Paris and KriskaDECOR's collaboration on the design of the Ecuadorian Pavilion at the Milan Expo.
In this issue we talk to one of Spain's most illustrious industrial designers, Francesc Rifé. He's worked with many top contemporary furniture and lighting brands since he launched his studio in the '90s and many of his designs are headed for, if they've not already been garlanded with, 'modern classic' status. He talks about his guiding principle of 'rationalism' and pays tribute to advances in manufacturing technologies which have made his ideas possible.
Another great name in Spanish design, Ramón Úbeda, talks about his role as design director for legendary Barcelona furniture company BD Barcelona Design, and we have a profile of Punt, a successful furniture company that was hit hard by the recession but which has come back from the brink thanks to great new design and financial restructuring.
With best wishes,
Julián Izquierdo
