BABEL
Spanish decorative lighting firm Parachilna’s latest collection is called Babel and was designed by New York-based Stephen Burks.
Babel is a pendant light that nods both to African totems and industrial Brutalism. Burks’s ceiling-hung creation impresses us with its modular design permitting almost countless configurations. The light has four components in different sizes, each comprising 18 blades in red, orange and yellow anodised aluminium. Covering the electrical components are cylinders in three sizes containing LED strip lights that emit a warm, ambient glow. The base of these fittings can also incorporate an LED-containing component with casts a direct light.
This is Burks’s second collection for the firm. The first, called Anwar, comprises floor and pendant lights made of electroplated steel rods in black, gold or copper, with LED lights found at their base.
Parachilna was founded in 2014 with the aim of producing luxury goods, which it takes to mean honestly designed, handcrafted pieces and an appreciation of noble materials. To achieve this, it’s worked with well-known, international designers such as Burks, Jaime Hayón and Neri & Hu, among others. According to prestigious British magazine Wallpaper*, which gave Parachilna the Best New Brand 2014 award, it’s among the world’s 100 most influential design brands.
