The restaurant Gipfel in the ski station at Chäserrugg — the easternmost of seven peaks in the mountain range of Churfirsten, eastern Switzerland — has chosen Spanish company BD Barcelona Design ’s B chairs to furnish it.
Perched at an altitude of around 2,260m, the restaurant was designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron, and officially opened in June, 2015. It’s a long space with an interior inspired by handcrafted wood that pays homage to the area’s fir trees. Its sloping roof is supported by columns, while its main feature is a covered terrace at the front of the restaurant. Along the sides are benches and tables, while at the centre are tables and BD Barcelona Design’s B chairs. In this space, entirely made of wood, customers can rest, eat and enjoy spectacular Alpine vistas.
The restaurant’s owners wanted a stackable wooden chair that can be easily removed and stowed away. Together with the architects, they chose the space-saving B chair because they thought it suited the project best out of all those they considered. Designed by Konstantin Grcic, it’s made of carved wood and its frame incorporates aluminium elements. The legs are X-shaped and the seat hinged, so it can be stacked in a horizontal way and takes up little space.
