Versatile Spanish designer Jaime Hayon is responsible for the interior and decor of the new Barceló Torre de Madrid Hotel, where art and design balance a sophisticated aesthetic with comfort and luxury.
The five-star hotel in one of the Spanish capital’s most iconic towers, the Torre de Madrid, is set to become a paradigm for elegance and design. For Jaime Hayon, the project has opened a new personal chapter in an already accomplished career, allowing him to create something unique in his native city. "I was fully dedicated to the creation of a very special and unique space that would represent a new vision of Spain, a vision far removed from the traditional aesthetic. Aside from being my hometown, for me, Madrid represents Spain’s diversity and richness".
Steeped in historical and cultural references, Hayon takes us on a visual journey through Spain’s past, mixing architectural details that evoke Roman arches with finishes reminiscent of the country’s Arab legacy. These influences from the past are matched by a stylishness that unifies historic grandeur with a modern approach. Hayon has amplified the natural light and filled each space with some of the finest brands of European furniture, all perfectly lit with a colour palette that reflects the richness and warmth of Spain itself.
The space is laden with symbolism, which emerges in the infinite attention to detail that brings each part of the hotel to life. As soon as you enter the lobby, you are greeted by an enormous bear in a brass top hat, in a surreal nod to the animal that features on Madrid’s coat of arms, and which stands there welcoming you to this new world of form and colour. Throughout the hotel, little sculptures, masks and manifold characters drawn from Hayon’s fertile imagination add his personal touch to each ambience. The framed artwork created from drawings traced on brass evokes a series of different aspects of Spanish tradition, including a bullfighter, a fan, a flamenco dress, a Valencian fallera and a girl in typical Madrid costume. Much of the furniture and lighting is bespoke, made by expert craftspeople specifically for the project. The rest comes from collections that Hayon has himself designed for top companies like Fritz Hansen, & Tradición, Gubi, Arflex, Cassina, BD Barcelona and Parachilna.
Hayon has turned the Barceló Torre Madrid Hotel into a magical space where guests and visitors can revel in a unique experience of luxury, sophistication and design, while discovering a world city with one of the vastest choices of culture and nightlife anywhere.
