The Maine and Volta pendant lamps by Spanish firm Estiluz have been chosen to light up the breakfast restaurant at the Hilton Gdansk. The 5-star hotel is located on the banks of the Motlawa River, which flows through the historical Polish city that was the birthplace of distinguished figures like German writer, Günter Grass and the charismatic former Polish president, Lech Walesa.
The materials and forms behind the sleek geometry of hanging lamps Maine and Volta give the restaurant a contemporary feel. Maine emphasises the space’s straight lines, while adding a maritime motif that breaks with convention and creates a bold atmosphere. Volta’s elegant arcs and cylinders blend with the restaurant’s spherical shapes, injecting extra dynamism.
Maine’s creators, the Goula/Figuera studio, were inspired by the small details of vast 19th-century ships, such as portholes and cowl vents. Classic but contemporary, the lamp pays tribute to the metalworking that has been the Estiluz tradition from the outset. Volta, meanwhile, is a ceiling suspension designed by the Nahtrang studio, with a curved metal arm, aluminium heads, and acrylic, cylindrical lens diffusers. This family of luminaires is defined by delicate arcs and simple cylinders, with transparent nylon cables for support and height modulation.
Estiluz makes high-end decorative lighting, working with renowned designers and new talent to create elegant, functional and timeless designs, some of which have received international awards. Revolta, designed by the Nahtrang studio, won Best Thin Pendant at the prestigious NYCxDESIGN awards 2017. The award was presented on 20 May at a ceremony hosted by MoMA (New York) and organised by ICFF and Interior Design magazine.
