Barcelona has just inaugurated the Kālida Sant Pau centre, an architectural space created so that people with cancer can undergo treatment in attractive, cosy surroundings, accompanied by their family members, friends and caregivers. Located next to the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona, this foundation offers emotional support to anyone with cancer, as well as to their immediate relatives; support they offer for free. Architect Benedetta Tagliabue was behind the design of the building, while designer Patricia Urquiola and her team created the interior design.
Like a garden pavilion whose boundaries between the indoor and the outdoor are blurred, this 400-m² building is laid out over two floors and is surrounded by a garden. Because the spaces are open and flexible, and the rooms look out onto plants and flower-beds, the feeling is not one of being in a hospital. With the supportive nature of this project in mind, a number of Spanish furniture and lighting brands, and others from sectors such as lifestyle and interior design, have chosen to help out by donating design pieces chosen by Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola.
Furniture for indoor spaces: Andreu World collaborated by giving various sofas and armchairs so that people can be comfortable during group activities, as well as chairs and small tables for individual assessment sessions. Some of the common areas and the dining room have been graced with his Nuez chairs. Viccarbe, on the other hand, donated the centre’s office desks, chairs and other complementary elements which encourage people to get together while also keeping a feel of intimacy.
Gan has supported the project by providing a set of sofas with a laid-back look for one of the group rooms, and this was complemented by rugs to create a cosy and attractive space. Kettal breaths life into many of the spaces with its indoor armchairs, chairs and tables and, thanks to its outdoor furniture, allows people to relax both indoors as well as in the garden.
With regard to lighting, designer lights and lamps came from Bover Barcelona, Marset and Santa & Cole. Roca also joined the project by donating sanitary-ware and bathroom complements, such as tiles. Other brands, such as Arlex, which donated shelving, and Teixidors with its textiles, came on board the project to help create an exciting, positive indoor space.
The garden can be enjoyed as an extension of the interior architecture thanks to furniture by the brand Point, which contributed tables, chairs and armchairs to the foundation.
