The Spanish design sector has a lot to be proud of. At the latest edition of the Frame Awards, five Spanish architectural and interior design studios received prizes for their innovation decorative proposals.
The Frame Awards, organized by FRAME magazine, took place in the Dutch capital city of Amsterdam from February 19 to 20. With the aim of exploring the future of spaces, renowned designers, architects, and brands recognized as leaders in their sectors, such as Google, have participated as speakers in an intense program full of talks, exhibitions, workshops, and round tables on innovation in retail, hotels, and offices.
During the event, sponsored this year for the first time by Cosentino, the Wonder Galaxy project by Patricia Bustos stood out amongst the other winners for the best use of color. In fact, the studio also won the Judges’ and General Public awards for the project presented at Casa Décor in 2019. Regarding this initiative, the creator explained that her creative concept evolves through “different settings in which the light changes each time, so that visitors can have a 360º experience and genuinely feel like they’re in another galaxy.”
Another project also boasting a Spanish name won the Judges’ and Public awards in the category of health care for the year with “Impress Dental Studio,” designed by Raúl Sánchez Architects. It’s a dental clinic located in the center of Barcelona. As explained by the studio, the project was designed in search of “a fresh design with which to represent the brand and its values, moving away from the cliché dental clinic.”
The third prizewinner was Zooco Estudio , which presented a project consisting of “building a house inside a house.” The concept that took home the Judges’ and Public awards for the best apartment of the year was based on a design that featured up to 10 horizontal structures at different heights, similar to loft-style furniture that adapts to the surrounding space.
Equally noteworthy is the joint project by Estudio Vilablanch and TDB Architectura, consisting of a coliving space in the six-story building Casa Burés, based in Barcelona. The building, constructed at the beginning of the 20th century by a close collaborator of Gaudí, was redesigned by these two studios, always respecting the modernist architecture and its original components. Lastly, the studio Vora Arquitectura, won the Public prize for small apartment of the year, also located in the city of Barcelona.
In addition, the Spanish furniture designer Andreu World also exhibited at the event for the third consecutive year in a row.
