Lighting design is more complex than just illuminating a space, and each product focuses on a function in which product design is crucial. Here are ten lamps that have caught our attention and were created by Spanish and international designers for well-known Spanish lighting firms.
Light and shadow effects based on the delicacy and diffusion of light
Different reflections of light are one of the aspects that lamp designers achieve thanks to the material used, the shape of the bulbs, and the rotation of the lighting. In doing so, they achieve exclusive effects with a more or less diffused light to penetrate through the atmosphere always in a unique way.
The ‘No title’ lamp designed by Mayice is a single piece of circular glass with a white glass tube inside that houses the light and creates a paper-like appearance when illuminated. It achieves a line of light suspended in the air, generating different reflections on the glass that vary depending on the viewer’s point of view, thus playing with lights, but also with shadows.
The ‘Agasallo’ pendant lamp, created by Hector Serrano for a By Arturo Alvarez, combines different heights and creates a unique atmosphere thanks to the multiple compositions available. Its shapes resemble gift wrapping, and the fact that it is hand-painted generates a unique projection of lighting effects.
Estiluz presents ‘Morse’, designed by Aparentment; a pendant lamp, which is modular, extendible, and movable with an adaptable structure. Morse can provide direct or ambient lighting thanks to its way of rotating lights along a metal structure to focus on something in particular, or simply blend in with the environment.
Milan Iluminación, with ‘Symphony’ by Jordi Pla, is a series of lamps (standing, wall and table) that feature light diffusion thanks to the rotating glass tulip it is known for. This rotation of the screen is possible thanks to the innovative magnetization system that allows us to direct the light to diffuse it or penetrate through the atmosphere of any contract space or habitat.
A portable, lightweight, and functional design
Achieving compact, simple, lightweight designs that allow us to bring light to any space are aspects that are often difficult to bring together. Some companies such as Faro Barcelona and Bover have managed to implement all these features into their latest lamp collections.
Faro Barcelona, with ‘Buddy’ by Andreu Carulla, is the new updated classic of the R95 bulb, which is compact, ergonomic, and functional. This cordless portable lamp, adaptable to the lifestyle and space of each user, consists of a touch switch with three intensities, ambient light, or higher light output. The lamp is sold through the company's e-shop and has already been awarded a German Design Award 2022 in the "Product Design" category for the concept it conveys.
Bover brings Mediterranean style to life with the formats and colors of ‘Nans’ (Joana Bover). This outdoor collection showcasing screens thanks to the unique handcrafted weaving of its fiber takes us to a secluded place on the Catalan coast, surrounded by wild nature. The portable version allows you to enjoy it in any outdoor space of your home or business
Contemporary style with geometric shapes
Contemporary style and a departure from the classical view of product design is something that often carries over into the shape of a lamp. In this sense, simple designs using geometric shapes are often common for both the brand and the designer, and companies such as Vibia, Marset, B.Lux and Leds C4 have used them in their latest collections.
Vibia’s ‘Ghost’ collection, devised by Arik Levy, has reinterpreted all the classic lamps that once adorned entryways and living rooms. The tabletop lamp consists of a stacked silhouette of rounded shapes with a black band that serves as a touch dimmer.
Marset, with its pendant lamp ‘Zenc’ designed by Joan Gaspar, is the perfect example of this geometric peculiarity that it is known for. The lamp, the shape of which reminds us of a circular house, achieves a unique and simple design that is inspired by the water tanks on the roofs of New York, giving it a contemporary shape with a nod to an industrial aesthetic.
B.Lux, with its ‘Bowee’ lamp created by Werner Aisslinger, available in various forms: pendant, wall, and standing lamp. All of them are light, with rounded and curved shapes in various scales that can be adapted to any space with the aim of illuminating spaces with different design concepts.
Leds C4, with its ‘Prolix’ lamp designed by Nahtrang Design, mixes this contemporaneity and style thanks to shapes that play with the angle of light. Prolix has both a wall lamp and pendant version. Both have a recognizable shape that makes them unique thanks to the technical advantage of graduating the angle of light to achieve the desired lighting effect.
