Diana Morant, Spain’s Minister of Science, Innovation, and Universities, has announced the winners of the National Innovation and Design Awards 2025. These awards honor the achievements of Spanish professionals and organizations that have elevated the prestige of Spanish design, as well as those that have made it a component of their business strategies, demonstrating that design is a powerful driver of innovation and competitiveness.
In the "Trajectory in Design" category, the award went to architect and designer Patricia Urquiola, who was recognized as "an undisputed figure in Spanish design on the international stage, with an exceptional career that has helped transform contemporary design." The jury also praised “her significant contribution to Spanish design and its global reach, thanks to her dedicated and meticulous work in education, academia, museums, and exhibitions.” A graduate of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid and the Polytechnic University of Milan, Patricia Urquiola founded her own studio in Milan in 2001. Since then, she has designed pieces for some of the world’s most prestigious brands—including Alessi, Moroso, Andreu World, Cassina, Kartell, and B&B—and created iconic works of global design now featured in major international institutions like MoMA in New York and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. Her work, which blends technological innovation with refined craftsmanship and a commitment to sustainability, has redefined 21st-century design. Always rooted in a humanistic, experimental, and socially conscious approach, her creations reflect an ongoing dialogue with beauty and society.
Viccarbe, an international leader in the design and production of contemporary furniture and a standout example of the finest Mediterranean-inspired Spanish design, won the award in the “Design and Company” category. The jury praised the company’s “ability to combine excellence, innovation, quality, and environmental responsibility in a model that perfectly integrates design into business strategy.” Founded in Valencia in 2000 by Víctor Carrasco and Daniel Benedito, Viccarbe creates warm, timeless, and functional pieces that foster interaction and creativity in workplaces, educational settings, and homes across dozens of countries worldwide.
In the “Young Design Professionals” category, the award was presented to industrial designer Miguel Leiro, “a standout from an extraordinary generation of young Spanish designers,” as the jury noted. They also highlighted “his bold creativity and his role in energizing and bringing visibility to emerging design in Spain,” as well as praising “his ability to build networks and his commitment to education and experimentation, qualities that make him one of the most influential young voices in the new wave of Spanish design.” Leiro is known for his experimental, multidisciplinary approach, striking a balance between material and conceptual research and the creation of objects and spaces that dialogue with history, anthropology, and contemporary culture.
Finally, the 2025 Special Mention in the "Trajectory in Design" category was awarded to Diego Areso, for his contributions to editorial and graphic design in Spain and the impact of his work on the digital transformation of print media.
