More than fifty years ago, in 1968, in La Foia de Castalla, Alicante, a small workshop dedicated to the manufacture of furniture of all kinds was born. This is where the origins of today's Actiu lie. Founded by Vicente Berbegal, in 1982 it was renamed Creaciones Berbegal and specialized in home furniture thanks to the groundbreaking manufacture of television tables in Spain. This was a real breakthrough for the time, and the starting point for a company that has made innovation one of its hallmarks.

After opening up the market in the computer and home office sector and developing furniture for personal computers for the first time in Spain in 1995, the Actiu brand was created in 2000, marking the beginning of a period of international expansion in office equipment. Eight years later, in 2008, came international brand recognition, and with it the importance of design as a tool for success. A philosophy of life and work that goes far beyond furniture design and was embodied in the new Actiu Technology Park, a sustainable industrial complex designed by architect José María Tomás Llavador and inaugurated in 2008.

The company has won numerous awards, including the National Design Award in the Business category in 2017, and its founder, Vicente Berbegal, was named Entrepreneur of the Year at the European Business Awards (EBA).

Design, innovation, the circular and proximity economy

For Actiu, good design pushes frontiers. All products are the result of the collaboration of a highly specialized in-house team with hugely experienced and talented external designers, who provide them with a global vision. Over the last twenty years, the brand has collaborated with studios and designers such as Alegre Design, ITEMdesignworks, Ramos & Bassols, Stone Designs, Sigfrido Bilbao and Isern Serra. This year we have gone a step further by collaborating for the first time with the Italian studio Archirivolto Design.

Technological innovation has always been another of the company's main priorities, both when it comes to designing furniture and to creating new work and contract spaces, and to achieving greater productivity and efficiency as well as improved international positioning. To achieve this, the company has its own R&D&I department and works in constant collaboration with professional experts in architecture, design, and interior design, plus the network of collaborating companies specialized in plastic and metal injection and extrusion in the area, which Actiu sought to reconvert to the furniture sector following the crisis in the toy sector.

In addition, the company is committed to sustainability (the circular economy) and local manufacturing (kilometer zero), the clearest example of which is the Actiu Technology Park. These facilities, located in Castalla in Alicante, are in line with the company's values and philosophy. In 2019, the Park obtained Platinum Well v2 Certification, a distinction that recognizes the complex as a healthy workspace, which looks after the health and well-being of its employees, becoming the fifth complex in the world to receive this certification. This year they have also grown, expanding the production plant, and equipping it with a photovoltaic plant with around 700 solar panels, which will enable it to use 100% clean energy.

Cool working

Specializing in the design and manufacture of furniture for work and contract environments, Actiu understands furniture as a tool for building spaces that improve people's lives. As the way people work and interact with each other has changed, so too must spaces, which must adapt to the needs of those who use them.

The dissolution of boundaries between different uses, meaning that a single space may be used as a place for meetings, leisure or work, and the emergence of new technologies that eliminate the need for physical contact and allow work to be carried out from anywhere, is conditioning the design of both products and spaces. To facilitate the process of change towards these new work models, Actiu has created a supporting process for equipping spaces with its products, which combines emotion and productivity and has been christened "Cool Working". The aim is to create solutions that respond to the new ways of working, which are much more dynamic and collaborative, while enhancing the creativity and productivity of those who use them.

Home Office

For the company, the "Home Office" is a trend that was already gaining momentum before the pandemic, and one that since then has become a necessity. An increasing number of companies have implemented a hybrid working model, combining some days of remote work with others of physical presence in the office.

Actiu has been taking care of people for more than 50 years and is committed to ergonomics. And in the Home Office, furniture plays a decisive role: it is not enough to place the computer in the first free space at home; a specific working space with a table and a chair adapted to the needs of each user and with all the necessary accessories must be set up. Ideally a workstation in the home should provide the same guarantees of well-being and functionality as one in the office. For this reason, coinciding with the pandemic, a new online sales platform was launched that allows the purchase of certain products from its catalogs, in quantities of up to three units, so that you can equip your home office with furniture that provides the same quality as conventional office furniture.

Best sellers and new products

Among Actiu's most emblematic and award-winning collections are the TNK Flex chair, the Talent lift-up table and the Badminton armchair.

TNK Flex is an operative and directional chair that adapts to the shape and movements of the human body and has a backrest and seat that adjust as if they were a second skin. Designed by Alegre Design, TNK Flex features two fundamental innovations: an evolution of ergonomic design and seat support technology similar to that used in truck cabs: a suspended seat that creates a sensation of weightlessness.

Talent, also created by Alegre Design, is a folding, elevating and mobile table, which adds great versatility to multipurpose spaces, especially training areas and educational spaces. Talent represents an improvement in terms of ergonomics, since no electrical connection is required to adjust the table, which makes it easy to move around. An easily accessible push button activates a gas piston that regulates both the raising and lowering of the work surface in a very smooth, subtle movement, with the user deciding on the height required.

The Badminton lounge seating, designed by ITEMdesignworks, is intended to be a distinctive feature in the workplace. Thanks to a dynamic and open design, it allows conversation, reading and the use of electronic devices. To support this concept of openness, arms have been eliminated, and a 180-degree opening has been created, favoring connectivity while at the same time providing privacy for the user thanks to its high degree of acoustic absorption.

Among the novelties this year are the Fluit and Bee chairs for public areas, and the A+S Work office chair. Fluit is a sleek and robust chair, designed by Archirivolto Design, and is 100% sustainable, as it uses fully recycled polypropylene plastic and fiberglass.  To create this chair, Actiu has made use of gas injection, an innovative industrial process that reinforces resistance and provides a delicate finish that is smooth to the touch.  Bee is a chair inspired by the forms of nature, which, thanks to its bold, striking aesthetics, fills any architectural space with a feeling of comfort. Manufactured in 100% polypropylene and fiberglass, it stands out for a design that is both stable and versatile. A+S Work is an ergonomic chair made entirely of thermoplastic material that debuts a new technological platform, based on a new synchronization mechanism patented by the brand.

Product Marketing

Distributors are the company's traditional sales channel. Marketing is directed more towards companies and projects, so online sales is not one of the channels that delivers the best results for the company.

In recent years, some markets and customers are showing increased interest in digital sales platforms such as Archiproducts, Architonic or pCON. Although for Actiu these are still not the main focus for the commercialization of its products, they are an important source of leads and contacts in the architecture and interior design sector, which help to give better brand and product positioning. PCon in particular is a platform widely used by the brand's partners.

Internationalization

Actiu began its internationalization process over 35 years ago. The company currently exports half of its production to more than 95 countries all around the world. Its main markets are Europe, the Middle East and Latin America, but the brand also has its sights set on Asia and Africa as markets with great potential for growth in the coming years.

The company has its own showrooms in London, Paris, Lisbon, Sydney, Miami, Madrid and Castalla (Alicante) and from October 5 will also have one in Dubai. With the new showroom in Dubai, the company intends to redouble its visibility in a strategic location for the local and global prescription sector, and the new showroom will serve as a point of union between its various partners and customers in the Middle East.

In recent years, Actiu has developed a multitude of interesting and high-volume projects in different markets. One of the most recent projects is the equipping of the facilities of the Italian energy group Enel in Italy, which stands out due to its strategic relevance. Other notable recent projects include the transformation of the former Prague offices of the largest Czech telecommunications operator, T-Mobile, the new library in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and the airport in Chisinau (Moldova).
