DESIGN IN/FROM SPAIN
DESIGN IN/FROM SPAIN
A warm welcome to our winter edition, which rounds off a successful year for many Spanish design companies. Spanish contemporary design is highly sought-after around the world and export demand has been high as countries come out of recession and consumer confidence grows.
One company that is enjoying strong sales is wood veneer lighting brand LZF. We talk to co-founder Mariví Calvo and in a Q&A she reveals that ironically it was in 2008 – the year the global recession started – that the banks started backing the company and it started to expand. She also says she reckons LZF is one of the most eco-friendly companies in Spain, given the team works by hand and it hasn't industrialized its manufacturing processes.
It has been a good year for Spanish companies on the international awards circuit and we look back at the big winners this year. Vibia, for example, has impressed many judging panels with its unique Wireflow lighting system by Arik Levy, while Nanimarquina has also made repeat walks up to the podium to collect an awards for its Rabari rug collection by Doshi Levien.
Congratulations to Metalarte on the 10th anniversary of its still top selling Josephine lamp by Jaime Hayón, and to Odosdesign, which has also turned 10.
Spanish brands are doing well on the other side of the pond. Quartz surface giant Cosentino has opened a Cosentino City showroom New York (along with another in Milan) and Andreu World has hit the West Coast with a showroom in San Francisco.
We shall be back in the new year, so from London we wish you all a very happy end of year and an even better 2016.
With best wishes,
Julián Izquierdo
