Ever-Spectacular a by Arturo Alvarez Designer Luminaires Shine in the US
The impressive pendant lamps from a-emotional light brighten hotels, restaurants, offices, events and other facilities around the world. We present the latest projects carried out in one of the Spanish firm’s top markets: the USA, where their luminaires captivate the country’s architecture and interior design studios. The state of Texas is the site of two installations that display their designer pieces: the offices of vacation apartment and cottage rental company VRBO, in Austin, and the Calpine building in the city of Houston. The VRBO offices in Austin shine with the design and color of the Caos suspension luminaire. This handcrafted lamp with recycled cellulose cord has an organic and natural form inspired by the primitive state of the cosmos. Its form and colors seduced RCH Studios, which selected a composition of 15 lamps in a variety of colors to light several common areas in this space. Several miles to the east, in the city of Houston, the elegant and delicate Fluo lamps hang in the lobby of the Calpine building. This installation, designed by the Abel Design Group, is comprised of a composition of over 30 pieces distributed throughout the space. The Fluo suspension lamp is created based on shades made of painted galvanized steel mesh that are joined gracefully around a single point of light. It is a lightweight form that produces the illusion of sheer fabric, like a semitransparent tulle that reveals and hides at the same time, playing with the intuition of the viewer. This designer piece won a Good Design Award in 2009. This same Fluo lamp, in its largest size, also lights the Fairfield County Library in the state of Virginia. The lamp, made up of 16 pieces, creates a large composition that fills this space, designed by the Quinn Evans Architects and Tappé Associates studios, with light and elegance. The a-emotional light company was created over 25 years ago in a small workshop in the north of Spain, surrounded by nature, where elaborate lamp designs were handcrafted. In 2018, this workshop added a new facility in “O Milladoiro”, La Coruña, designed to improve the creative process for the designer pieces that are exported around the world.

Capdell brings the warmth of Mediterranean furnishings to Canada, Russia and Estonia
Winters in Canada, Russia and Estonia don't feel quite so cold when you're enjoying a relaxed meal in a restaurant featuring furniture by the Spanish company Capdell, which reflects the warmth of its home on the shores of the Mediterranean. In the restaurant at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, the only museum in Canada dedicated exclusively to ceramic arts, we find the Eco chairs, designed by Carlos Tiscar and the MJ tables, bringing a touch of serenity and design to the space. The mustard-colored upholstery of the Eco chairs blends with the russet tones and natural textures of the wood and stone which adorn the walls of this eatery, led by chef Bianca Azupardo. In the restaurant “Under the Sea” in the Russian capital, Capdell's designs and use of wood bring the warmth of the "Mare Nostrum". The wooden slats which adorn the walls and the space's roof evoke the movement of ocean waves, and find a visual echo in the back, legs and shape of the NIX chairs, created by Patrick Norguet. These earth tones are rounded out by the shades of gray chosen for the upholstery of the chairs and by the MJ tables. The two furniture lines make this Muscovite restaurant an island haven. Finally, in the Puri restaurant, located at the Haven Kakumäe marina in Tallinn, the chairs and seats from the collection designed by Fran Silvestre look like works of art in this innovative, functional space. Here, near the bar, we also find the Flick stools created by Vicente Soto, which invite us to taste the kitchen's delicious offerings in a more relaxed atmosphere.

Kettal further glamorises the sublime Joali resort in the Maldives
If you were to dream of a heavenly place in which to relax, surrounded by a turquoise sea, it would probably look like the Maldives. The design studio Autoban created the interior design and some of the architectural elements of the exclusive Joali resort, located on the island of Muravandhoo, which is part of the Raa Atoll. To furnish the hotel’s lounge and the terraces of the villas, the studio chose various collections by the Spanish outdoor furniture brand Kettal. The studio designed this 5-star resort with the idea of fusing the indoor and outdoor spaces of this complex with the exotic and idyllic landscape that surrounds it. In line with the aesthetics of the islands – and using local materials, such as bamboo and coconut fibre – the design team created architectural elements based on traditional and artisanal techniques used by the craftsmen of the Maldives. The resort has 73 luxury villas, some on land while others are over the water. Each one has been beautifully decorated and carefully fitted out down to the very last detail to ensure that guests enjoy a unique experience. The design team were particularly discriminating when choosing the designer furniture, because it had to be both functional and movable. Kettal was the perfect choice as their pieces blend naturally with the Maldivian soul of this hotel complex. Basket armchairs, designed by Nanna & Jorgen Ditzel, can be found in the hotel’s lounge and outdoor areas, as well as on the terraces of the villas. Other Kettal furniture at the hotel includes Club armchairs and Cala dining chairs designed by Doshi Levien, sofas and tables from the Riva collection and Park Life dining tables by Jasper Morrison, and Mesh and Vieques tables designed by Patricia Urquiola. Once again, Kettal has been chosen to furnish a luxury hotel.

Vondom captivates luxury hotels and other facilities in China
Vondom continues to expand impressively in the Chinese design-project market. We are delighted to unveil the latest luxury hotels and facilities furnished with design pieces by the Spanish firm. Our journey in China begins at Sheshan Mountain, 50 kilometres from the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai. November 2018 saw the inauguration of the exclusive InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland hotel, a stunning 18-storey resort whose architecture is in perfect harmony with its natural surroundings. Buried some 90 metres deep in an old quarry – with only two floors above ground level – it is believed to be the deepest hotel in the world. ATKINS was the brain behind the design of the concept and the façade, while the interior design was undertaken by CCD/Cheng Chung Design. To enhance the feeling of harmony and serenity of this space, Vondom chose to use pieces from collections by designers Ramon Esteve (Faz and Ulm), Javier Mariscal (Mora), and by Archirivolto (Fiesta).Designed by the renowned firm Zaha Hadid Architects, the spectacular Morpheus hotel opened in Macau in June 2018. The huge, twisting geometric façade – which makes this 40-storey building unique – is its hallmark feature, allowing you to pinpoint the hotel from anywhere in the city. Vertex chairs, created by Karim Rashid, imbue the lobby of this artistic and sculptural hotel with modernity, elegance and refinement. In 2019, Vondom also provided furniture for the WAITAN-BFC gym in Shanghai, and for the Vanke Longcheer Yacht Club.Founded in 1998, the Vanke Longcheer Yacht Club is located between the Dapeng Peninsula and Daya Bay. It has been used as the competition’s base for the China Cup International Regatta for six consecutive years. Designed by the well-known dock manufacturer, Bellingham Marine, and the Deson design studio in Shenzen, the main building’s facilities include the club house, apartments owned by members, a breakwater, yacht berths, and yacht repair workshops and facilities. Another featured chair is the “Nix”, created by Patrick Norguet, a piece that won the Good Design Award in 2018 and the Red Dot Award in 2019. Its internal geometry features subtle contrasts that bring together vertical and slightly angled lines. Finally, in the common areas, the interior designers chose “Concord” stools designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune. This hotel, which features voice-controlled rooms, has recognised the value that both design and technology add to the guest experience.
