Lights designed in Spain dazzle Milan

Join Interiors from Spain on a tour of Milan trade show Euroluce 2017 and discover the cutting-edge designs unveiled by Spanish light makers.  

Our tour begins with a visit to Arturo Alvarez which has more fascinating collections featuring their organic, geometric and whimsical creations. This year they are launching PILI, a collection created from a single painted stainless-steel thread, entwined to create random volumes. Interwoven with harmonious irregularity, light escapes haphazardly from within and the effect is an enigmatic charm. ONN is a series of stainless steel mesh lamps inspired by the underwater world, while URA lamps are delicately wound by hand into shapes drawn from nature. As for the three works of art the designer unveiled at the Italian trade fair, these were among the most photographed objects by the public attending the event: AGORA features spectacularly sculptural human figures, ENCONTROS an imposing set of slender anthropomorphic figures, and CONVERSAS a powerful collection of face-like forms. 

Next, check out Marset, which this year captivate with their colourful portable lamp BICOCA, designed by Christophe Mathieu, lightweight and with an intimate light that will infuse any space with warmth. Xavier Mañosa’s PU-ERH collection uses ceramic to achieve a delicate textile effect, while the JAIMA family created by Joan Gaspar uses real textiles to transport us to northern Africa. We round off the journey with the PIOLA collections made by Christophe Mathieu, COPERNICA designed by Ramirez i Carrillo and DJEMBÉ by Joan Gaspar.

From LZF Lamps, you’ll find BANGA designed by Yonoh, and inspired by traditional Japanese umbrellas, KIM, created by Mariví Calvo, and the STITCHES collection designed by Egbert-Jan Lam of the Burojet design studio. STITCHES features four different designs: Mopti, Tombuctu, Djenné and Bamako. Each gets its name from a city in Mali and their shapes are an allusion to the country’s many mosques. Every wood veneer lamp in the collection is handmade, using traditional sewing techniques, except in this case, each section is sewn outwards so the seams are on the outside of the lamp, in an ingenious idea that allows the light to shine through the stitches.

As always, Vibia win us over with their singularly innovative lights. Designer Stefan Diez has developed a series of wall lamps, floor and hanging lights called GUISE for the brand, using a new LED technology which incorporates the light into the material so that it travels invisibly, and seems to appear out of nowhere. Studio Note Design has created the MUSA lamp collection to provide a light full of warmth, while Arik Levy entranced us with his STRUCTURAL light collection, based on a combination of cube shapes comprising sculptures integrated into the architecture of a given space. Finally from Vibia, was the warm light emitted by PALMA, a collection created by Antoni Arola.

B.lux has reedited and expanded some of its previous collections. New this year is the C_BALL collection by Stone Designs,inspired by a solar system and orbiting planets. Also GINKGO, created by Tim Brauns and inspired by the tree of the same name and pendant lamp R2 designed for B.lux by David Abad.

The delicate organic shapes of Bover’s outdoor lights exude their usual Mediterranean charm. Our choice from this year’s outdoor collections is ATTICUS, designed by Joana Bover, and CORNET lamps by Alex Fernández Camps. Their more contemporary line includes two lamp collections by designer Cristophe Mathieu: DROP and DRIP, which gradually release their magic as you approach, and PENTA designed by Gonzalo Milà and Juan Carlos Ines.

Or you could go for some of the latest collections from Faro Barcelona, like MINE and HUEL, designed by Nahtrang studio, the portable lamp HOOK created by Oiko, STICKER wall lights and beacon lamps designed by Lucid and BU OH signed by Estudi Ribaudí, and the NIT wall lamp designed by Goula Figuera.

From Estiluz, take a look at Revolta, created by the Nahtrang studio as a development on their Volta lamp, and wall lamp ECLIPSI designed by Josep Lluís Xuclà.

New from Santa & Cole is an LED lighting system of Japanese inspiration called TEKIO, designed by Anthony Dickens. They have also updated some of their classic bestsellers, like a cordless version of the iconic CESTA family, designed back in 1962 by Spanish master industrial designer Miguel Milá.

Of the new creations by Carpyen, our choices are standard lamp CARLA designed by Gabriel Teixido, pendant lamp NEIL by Xavier Solé and ceiling light COLETTE by Nahtrang.

AlmaLight unveiled seven new lights. Particularly outstanding was cordless PATIO, designed by Oriol Llahona and ceiling rose SUPER MOON designed by Josep Novell & Ernest Perera.

Finally, two furniture brands are bringing out light ranges: Kettal is launching MIA collection by Michel Charlot and Calma are entering the outdoor lighting market with their first lamp, LLUM, created by CrousCalogero.
