During February and March, Madrid hosts the largest design event at this time in Europe: the fourth edition of the Madrid Design Festival.
In 2021, as a result of the pandemic, the festival goes even more virtual, but also lands loaded with activities and on-site exhibitions of product design, architecture, interior design and communication under the slogan "Redesign the World."
Among on-site activities, until March 14, four exhibitions at the Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa stand out: "Connected,” a singular experiment developed during the Covid-19 confinement by nine prominent international designers, where among other chairs and tables, we find the "mesamachine" created by Jaime Hayón for this project; “Madrid Design Portrait,” a sample of product design proposals from a selection of studios and designers such as Álvaro Catalán de Ocón, Mayice, Mad Lab, or Belén Moneo, who develop their professional activity in Madrid; the exhibition "Emergency! Designs Against COVID-19”, a project of the Barcelona Design Museum in collaboration with ADI-FAD. And for the first time, the presentation in Madrid of "Valencia World Design Capital in 2022" at the "Valencia Pavilion. The Future is Design," an exhibition formed by a set of wooden arches containing audiovisuals in the form of a labyrinth designed by MUT Design and curated by Estudio Savage. This exhibition reflects on the present and future of Mediterranean design, displaying examples of cutting-edge brands in the Valencian industry and craftsmanship, which promotes the global capital of the city of Valencia in 2022.
In addition, the ICO Museum will host the work of architect Carme Pinos, National Architecture Prize in 1995, and Mazda and SACo will organize the second exhibition of contemporary crafts designed with handcrafted processes and materials.
Also, among the festival’s talks and conferences are the professional conferences MadridDesignPRO, which will be all in digital format this year. In them, big names of national and international design reflect on the role of design and its capacity to reinvent the world. These talks host, among other creators, designer Patricia Urquiola, presenting, together with Andreu World, the new Nuez Lounge BIO® chair, one of the most sustainable chairs in the world. Paula Scher and Moritz Waldemeyer will be at meetings organized by Cosentino. And Cutu Mazuelos (Stone-Designs) or Izaskun Chinchilla in the online meetings organized by the company Finsa. Inaddition, the winners of the Madrid Design Festival award for 2021 will be interviewed: Jaime Hayon and Selgas Cano Studio
In total, the event will feature 183 activities, 58 exhibitions, and the presence of more than 500 professionals. All this, with the goal of turning Madrid into the world’s capital of contemporary design for a few weeks.
